Description

I was surprised to see this Barred Owl hanging outside my apartment window while I was eating breakfast today. I wish I had a little bit longer lens.

Because this was such a lucky shot to get at all, it seems almost unfair to critique at all, as many of the things I would say (such as that it would have been nice to zoom in more) you are no doubt aware of. But, since critique was enabled I will attempt to share some of my thoughts that may be slightly less obvious.

It's great that you got a shot of him looking right at you, and I think his placement in the photo is pretty good though I would have liked it aesthetically if he were a little higher up (in part because he's a bird and I think a sense of height is appropriate). It's too bad there is a branch going right across his body, but I'm guessing there may again have been nothing you could do about that. The other branches in the foreground, at top and bottom, actually create sort of a framing effect that I rather like.

Because you already have the building in the background, it would have been interesting to see if there was anything you could do to actually sort of highlight that it is an urban setting, and therefore a comparison/contract between nature and 'civilization'. Since you couldn't get a true close up anyway, I think it would have been worth even zooming out a bit if that helped you build that effect. But of course, not knowing what you had to work with, it's all speculation.

My ultimate take on this is that it's not great as a work of artistic photograph, but as "hey, look what was outside my window!" it's pretty cool, and I assume that's a large part of what you were going for when you snapped the picture.
